What is a louvre roof?
A louvre roof is an aluminium pergola with adjustable roof blades. The blades rotate from 0° to 90°, so you control how much sun, shade and airflow comes through. When fully closed, the blades overlap and channel rainwater into gutters built into the frame, then down through the posts.
You may also see louvre roofs called opening roof pergolas, louvred pergolas or bioclimatic pergolas. They're different names for the same idea.
How a louvre roof works
Aluminium blades on pivots, controlled by remote or manually.
Open
Blades rotate open for full sun and airflow. Ideal for winter days and summer mornings.
Angle
Tilt the blades for filtered shade while keeping the space bright.
Close
Blades close and overlap. Rain runs into the frame gutters and down the posts.
Enclose
Add roller blinds or louvre shutter doors on any side, now or later.
Louvre roof vs pergola vs canopy
All three create a covered outdoor area. Here's how they differ.
We install all three. Your free on-site measure includes a recommendation based on your space, orientation and how you want to use it.
How much does a louvre roof cost in NZ?
Every louvre roof is made to measure, so the final price depends on your site. We keep our pricing competitive, and as a guide:
Typical motorised louvre roof, 3m × 4m, supplied and installed in Auckland
Around $9,000 + GST
From around $750/m² + GST. Guide price only; your quote depends on size, site conditions and options.
The main things that affect the price:
- Size and span. Bigger areas need more blades and longer beams. Wide spans without extra posts need stronger sections.
- Freestanding or wall-mounted. Attaching to your house can reduce the number of posts, depending on your wall and eave structure.
- Control and lighting. Motorised remote control or manual operation, plus optional LED lighting.
- Side options. Roller blinds, louvre shutter doors and other side enclosures.
- Site conditions. Wind exposure, ground conditions and access for installation.
The most reliable way to know your cost is a free on-site measure. See standard sizes on our aluminium louvre roof page.

Options you can add now or later
Start with the roof and build up the space as your needs change. Mix and match on each side.
Roller blinds
Fit on any side for shade, privacy and protection from wind and rain.
Louvre shutter doors
Adjustable side screening that matches the roof blades.
LED lighting
Dimmable lighting built into the frame for evening use.
For example: blinds facing the prevailing wind, shutter doors facing the garden.

Is a louvre roof right for you?
A quick check before you book a measure.
✓ A louvre roof is a great fit if:
- You want to use your outdoor space year-round
- You're tired of losing the BBQ to unpredictable weather
- Natural light into the rooms next to it matters to you
- You want to adjust sun and shade day to day
- You'd like to add blinds or doors later as your needs change
△ Consider a fixed pergola or canopy if:
- You prefer a simpler system with no moving parts
- You only need shade in summer
- You want a specific roof material, like clear or tinted panels
- Budget is the main priority
Questions to think about before you get quotes
These also make it easier to compare quotes from different suppliers.
Which way does the area face? North-facing spaces get strong summer sun, so adjustable shade makes the biggest difference there.
How windy is your site? Coastal and elevated properties need a structure designed for higher wind loads.
How will you use the space? Dining, lounging, a spa area or a kids' play space all suit different sizes and layouts.
Attached or freestanding? Attached suits spaces next to living areas. Freestanding works well in the garden or by a pool.
Sides now or later? Plan where blinds or shutter doors could go, even if you add them later.
What does the warranty cover, and for how long? Ask every supplier the same question so you're comparing like with like.
Do you need building consent for a louvre roof?
It depends on the size, location and design. Some small outdoor structures can be exempt from building consent under the Building Act, but the rules vary with floor area, distance from the boundary and how the structure attaches to your house. Auckland Council's district plan rules, such as height-to-boundary and site coverage, can also apply even when building consent isn't needed.
We explain this in more detail in our guide: Do I need a building consent for my new pergola? During your on-site measure, we'll talk you through what's likely to apply to your property.
Custom-installed vs DIY kitset louvre roofs
Kitset louvre roofs sold online can look cheaper up front. They can work for some sheltered, simple sites, but there are trade-offs:
- Fit. Kitsets come in standard sizes. A custom louvre roof is made to fit your exact space, height and house line.
- Wind and weather. Many Auckland suburbs, especially coastal and elevated areas, get strong wind. A custom installation is designed with your site's exposure in mind.
- Drainage. Rain needs to run off correctly through the gutters and posts. Poor installation can lead to leaks or pooling water.
- Room to grow. A custom system is set up so blinds and shutter doors can be added later without rework.
- Warranty and support. A 10-year structural warranty and a local Auckland team to call if anything needs adjusting.
Is a louvre roof right for Auckland weather?
Auckland's weather changes quickly: bright sun, sudden showers, humid summers and windy spring days. A louvre roof suits this well, because you adjust it to the conditions instead of being stuck with one setting. Aluminium also suits Auckland's coastal climate, as it doesn't rot, warp or need repainting like timber.

Common questions about louvre roofs
How much does a louvre roof cost in NZ?
From around $750/m² + GST. As a guide, a typical 3m × 4m motorised louvre roof supplied and installed in Auckland is around $9,000 + GST. Your final price depends on size, site conditions and options.
How long does it take to get a louvre roof?
Manufacturing and shipping take about 6–8 weeks after you confirm your order, followed by installation.
What warranty comes with a louvre roof?
Our louvre roofs come with a 10-year structural warranty.
Is a louvre roof better than a pergola?
It depends on how you'll use the space. A fixed pergola costs less and suits reliable shelter. A louvre roof lets you adjust sun, shade and airflow, and closes against rain, so it suits people who want to use the space year-round.
Is a louvre roof waterproof?
When the blades are closed, they overlap and direct rain into the built-in gutter system. Wind-driven rain can still come in from the sides, which is why many homeowners add roller blinds or louvre shutter doors.
Can I add blinds or doors later?
Yes. Roller blinds, louvre shutter doors and other side options can be added at installation or any time afterwards.
Can a louvre roof be attached to my house?
In many cases, yes. We check your wall and eave structure during the on-site measure to see whether wall-mounted or freestanding suits your home better.
What maintenance does a louvre roof need?
Mainly occasional cleaning of the blades and gutters to remove leaves and dirt, especially if you have trees nearby.
